Cultural Notes

The Ko-So-A Pattern

Japanese organizes "this/that" words into a neat three-way system based on distance. こう, こんな are for things near you. そう, そんな are for things near the listener. ああ, あんな are for things far from both of you. This same pattern runs through これ/それ/あれ, ここ/そこ/あそこ, and now こう/そう/ああ and こんな/そんな/あんな.

そう Has Two Lives

You already know そう as a quick agreement - "Yeah, that is right." In this lesson, そう means "like that" or "in that way." Both uses are everywhere, and context always makes it obvious. If someone describes how to do something and you say そうします, you are saying "I will do it that way."

だんだん vs かなり - Degree vs Pace

だんだん describes a slow, step-by-step change - picture a sunrise getting brighter. かなり is about degree - you expected a little and got a lot. Saying だんだん寒くなりました means the cold crept in over time. Saying かなり寒いです means it is much colder than you expected.
