Grammar
to; toward (a destination)
Put に after a place to say where you are going. It marks the destination - the place you are headed to. In English, it is like saying "to" as in "I go to school."
Pattern
[place] + に + 行きます
[place] + に + 来ます
[place] + に + 帰ります
[place] + に + [movement verb like 行く, 来る, 帰る]
Examples
- に marks WHERE you are going. If you are already there and doing something at that place, use で instead.
- You already know に for time (三時に). Same word, different job - with time it means "at," with places it means "to."
at; in (where an action happens)
Put で after a place to say where you DO something. It tells the listener the location where an action takes place. In English, it is like saying "at" or "in" as in "I study at the library."
Pattern
[place] + で + [action verb]
[place] + で + [action verb]
Examples
- Use で when something is happening at a place. Use に when you are moving toward a place. Going TO school = 学校に. Studying AT school = 学校で.
