飛行機 (ひこうき) hikouki

airplane

Noun

A word for a person, place, thing, or idea.

飛行機は九時に出ます

hikouki wa kuji ni demasu — The airplane departs at nine.

飛行機で日本に行きます

hikouki de nihon ni ikimasu — I go to Japan by airplane.

あの飛行機は大きいです

ano hikouki wa ookii desu — That airplane is big.

地下鉄 (ちかてつ) chikatetsu

subway

Noun

A word for a person, place, thing, or idea.

地下鉄で学校に行きます

chikatetsu de gakkou ni ikimasu — I go to school by subway.

地下鉄は速いです

chikatetsu wa hayai desu — The subway is fast.

この駅から地下鉄に乗ります

kono eki kara chikatetsu ni norimasu — I take the subway from this station.

船 (ふね) fune

ship; boat

Noun

船から海を見ました

fune kara umi wo mimashita — I saw the ocean from the ship.

あの船は大きいです

ano fune wa ookii desu — That ship is big.

船に乗りたいです

fune ni noritai desu — I want to ride a ship.

駅 (えき) eki

station

駅はここから近いです

eki wa koko kara chikai desu — The station is close from here.

駅の前で友達に会います

eki no mae de tomodachi ni aimasu — I meet my friend in front of the station.

次の駅で降ります

空港 (くうこう) kuukou

airport

空港で飛行機に乗ります

パスポート pasupooto

passport

Noun

パスポートを持っていますか

pasupooto wo motte imasu ka — Do you have your passport?

パスポートを忘れました

pasupooto wo wasuremashita — I forgot my passport.

パスポートはここにあります

pasupooto wa koko ni arimasu — The passport is here.

泊まる (とまる) tomaru

to stay (overnight)

Group 1 verb

The most common verb type. The ending sound changes depending on how you use it — like how 飲む (drink) becomes 飲みます in formal speech.

Dictionary form

泊まる (とまる)

友達の所に泊まる

tomodachi no tokoro ni tomaru — I stay at my friend's place.

Formal present

泊まります (とまります)

tomarimasu

今日はここに泊まります

kyou wa koko ni tomarimasu — I will stay here today.

Casual negative

泊まらない (とまらない)

tomaranai

今日は泊まらない

kyou wa tomaranai — I am not staying today.

Formal negative

asoko ni wa tomarimasen — I will not stay there.

旅行(する) (りょこう(する)) ryokou(suru)

to travel

Irregular verb

One of two special verbs — する (to do) or 来る (to come). They follow their own unique patterns that you just have to memorize.

Dictionary form

旅行する (りょこうする)

ryokou suru

来月日本に旅行する

raigetsu nihon ni ryokou suru — I travel to Japan next month.

Formal present

旅行します (りょこうします)

ryokou shimasu

毎年旅行します

maitoshi ryokou shimasu — I travel every year.

Casual negative

旅行しない (りょこうしない)

ryokou shinai

今月は旅行しない

kongetsu wa ryokou shinai — I am not traveling this month.

Formal negative

旅行しません (りょこうしません)

ryokou shimasen

来週は旅行しません

raishuu wa ryokou shimasen — I will not travel next week.

Casual past

旅行した (りょこうした)

ryokou shita

先月フランスに旅行した

sengetsu furansu ni ryokou shita — I traveled to France last month.

Formal past

旅行しました (りょこうしました)

ryokou shimashita

去年韓国に旅行しました

kyonen kankoku ni ryokou shimashita — I traveled to South Korea last year.

Casual past negative

旅行しなかった (りょこうしなかった)

ryokou shinakatta

去年はどこにも旅行しなかった

kyonen wa doko ni mo ryokou shinakatta — I did not travel anywhere last year.

Formal past negative

旅行しませんでした (りょこうしませんでした)

ryokou shimasen deshita

先週は旅行しませんでした

senshuu wa ryokou shimasen deshita — I did not travel last week.

Te-form

旅行して (りょこうして)

ryokou shite

友達と旅行してきました

tomodachi to ryokou shite kimashita — I went on a trip with my friend.

来月日本に旅行します

raigetsu nihon ni ryokou shimasu — I will travel to Japan next month.

旅行が好きです

ryokou ga suki desu — I like traveling.

友達と一緒に旅行しました

tomodachi to issho ni ryokou shimashita — I traveled together with my friend.

Grammar

でした

was; were (past tense of です)

Put this at the end of a sentence to say what something was. It turns "is" into "was." Use it when you are talking about the past. You can use it with things and people (like "It was a birthday" or "He was a student") and describing words that use な (like "It was quiet").

Pattern

[thing/person] + でした

[な-describing word] + でした

A thing, person, or な-describing word + でした

Examples

昨日は誕生日でしたYesterday was my birthday.

kinou wa tanjoubi deshita

先週の旅行は好きでしたI liked last week's trip.

senshuu no ryokou wa suki deshita

あの人は学生でしたThat person was a student.

ano hito wa gakusei deshita
