Cultural Notes

The 館 (kan) pattern

Notice how 図書館 (library) and 美術館 (art museum) both end in 館. This character means "building" or "hall." Once you spot this pattern, you can often guess what a new 館-word means - it's some kind of public building.

散歩 is more than exercise

In Japan, 散歩 (taking a walk) is a common daily routine, not just exercise. Many people walk around their neighborhood in the morning or evening as a way to relax and connect with their surroundings. You'll often see people of all ages strolling through parks and along rivers.

郵便局 does more than mail

Japanese post offices handle much more than letters and packages. They also offer banking services and savings accounts through Japan Post Bank. Many people, especially in smaller towns, use the 郵便局 as their main bank.
